MARBLE-DRAWING PROCESS

2021

In this video I share my method for marbling paper & then adding drawn and beaded imagery. Made in celebration of the Western Exhibitions Drawing Biennial.

{video description for people with visual impairment: I swirl fuschia, blue, and ochre pigments in a shallow tray of viscous carrageenan-thickened water. Then I lay a piece of paper on top of the swirled pigments and lift it up, revealing a print of the swirls. Then I stare at the piece of paper as it is pinned to a wall, and use a pencil and sketchbook to make two loosely observational drawings of the marbled piece of paper. Then I use black ink and a brush to draw new images (mostly of eyes, mouths, and drips) into and onto the marbled paper as it lays flat on a table. I also show my process for embroidering some smoky imagery using small multicolored miscellaneous beads onto a different piece of marbled paper. Then I show a few examples of finished marbled drawings, both inked and beaded. Full audio description of those individual drawings gladly available upon request.}
